Poverty Is A Problem Essay

972 words - 4 pages

They say “you can change the world,” but until you start to do it, you may never believe this statement. Though it may be near impossible to solve a world issue alone, one person can start a movement of people working together to create amazing things. It’s not surprising news that our world isn’t perfect. There’s always something going wrong, and while the news channels can sometimes cause you to have a negative attitude, you have to remember that there are good things and good people in the world trying to create better situations for everyone. With all the pressing concerns in the media each day, I believe that poverty is the most important issue facing all of humanity. Whether someone is one of the staggering 3 billion living in poverty or not they are affected by it in one way or another. No one can pretend to be the one person that is going to fix everything, but by creating awareness, leading by example, and helping and inspiring others to implement their own unique projects hundreds of everyday heroes can be created.
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound? If there is an issue and no one talks about it, will it ever get resolved? Do people even know about it? Possibly the most important action I can take to combat poverty is to create awareness. This starts by knowing the facts. The short but astonishing facts are sometimes the ones that get the point across the easiest. For example, 80% of the world lives on less than $10 a day. While some people may be taken back by this fact, others would have a hard time understanding how poor that actually is. For that reason, I have to relate the fact to them. For instance, the average American lives on about $59 a day.something ere?
Being knowledgeable with facts, will allow me to educate and inform my friends and others about the global issue through everyday conversation. Talking with people is an easy way to spread awareness about the concern of poverty. Sometimes, people find it uncomfortable to share their ideas with enormous groups, so casual conversations with smaller crowds is more beneficial. Bringing up the facts, and bringing light to the issue collectively could spark the motivation to create change.
Another easy way to spread awareness is through social media websites. Almost everyone has some kind of a social media page, and it has become the best way to contact mass groups of people. Links to online articles regarding facts and how to help those affected by poverty can be easily posted. Knowledge is power.
Actions speak louder than words, and leading by example is perhaps the loudest of them all. People are more responsive when you show them rather than tell them...
