“Dollhouse”; A Trip Back to Reality
Melanie Martinez’s “Dollhouse” is about a family of dolls who appear perfect superficially but
are not flawless behind closed doors. Through the usage of an extended metaphor and
apostrophe, the song effectively addresses society’s unreasonable expectation for perfection. It
also brings back a sense of reality; the desire for perfection is impractical, it is impossible to be
perfect.
Throughout the song, a feeling of falseness is suggested. It is first hinted at through the extended
metaphor and title “Dollhouse”, which refers to the façade of families. Similar to a dollhouse,
imperfections can be found if a person carefully examines a family. This sense of falsity is
proposed again in the lines “Places, places, get in your places,” “Throw on your dress and put on
your doll faces.” and “Picture, picture, smile for the picture.” The first line feels as though
everyone in the family is assigned a specific position and role, which is similar to acting in a
movie. If everyone ‘acts’ correctly, the family will achieve their illusion of being flawless. In
the second line, the words “ put on your doll faces” are very ironic because it is a family of
dolls. Therefore everyone already has doll faces. So it can be said that the term ‘doll faces’ is
synonymous to the mask the family wears to cover secrets. The word ‘’picture’’ in the third line
suggests the family’s desire to appear perfect as pictures are meant to be perfect. Furthermore,
this feeling of falseness is further expressed in the line: “When you walk away, it’s when we
really play,” which shows that the family’s true identity and behavior are revealed when

outsiders are not present. Finally, the word “plastic” which is mentioned in the last two lines of
stanza 6 is symbolic for perfection or flawlessness. Overall, this feeling of falseness supports the
central theme of how families and people who appear perfect superficially are not perfect in
reality.
In addition, the setting of the song is an attic, demonstrated in the line “she’s coming to the attic”
Attics are notoriously known as a place to keep hidden secrets. Therefore, the setting of the song
lends its self to the main theme of superficial perfection.
This song is sung by the daughter of the family of dolls, Crybaby. In the song, Crybaby seems
like the only person who tries to maintain the family's reputation and perfect image desperately.
In fact, Crybaby may even be desperate to keep the family’s secrets. This desperation is shown in
the lines: “Don’t let them see what goes down in the...
