Jaclyn is 23 years old single African American mother who has her four year old son enroll at Berean Head Start Centers, one of the programs under the umbrella of Total Community Action, INC of New Orleans. One of the requirements is that families who have children enroll at any of the Head Start or Early Start Programs parents are to meet with the Social Worker or the Family Service Worker to complete a Partnership Agreement. The Partnership Agreement is to help families set reachable goals in an attempt to enrich their future and provide a better quality of life for them and their children. Jaclyn’s last doctor’s visit and test revealed that she has developed Preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia is a serious condition characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to serious even fatal complications for mother and baby (http://www.webmd.com/baby/tc/preeclampsia). Jaclyn is 30 weeks into her pregnancy and the problem with high blood pressure is causing serious breathing problem to the baby. Doctor has call for Jaclyn’s mother to come to the hospital. Jaclyn goes in-and out of a deep sleeping pattern due to the elevation of her diastolic pressure, blurred vision, fatigue, and upper belly pain the concern is that she may be developing HELLP syndrome which is:
H--Hemolysis. This is the breakdown of red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
EL--Elevated liver enzymes. High levels of these chemicals can be a sign of liver problems.
LP--Low platelet count. Platelets help the blood clot.
The change in Jaclyn blood pressure is causing the baby to be in displaying sign of stress. This stress is causing major problem for the baby breathing pattern. A decision must be made at once, whether to take the baby now or run the risk of Jaclyn having a seizure, and suffering brain damage or taking the baby early by caesarian section before an increase of fluid begin to move into the placenta.
