Vestitul indemn lansat la inceputul secolului trecut de unul din parintii culturii romane moderne, Ion Heliade Radulescu, "Scriti baieti, numai scriti", a fost si a ramas cuvantul de ordine al gazetariei autohtone. Inceputa sub semnul elanurilor romantice, al mizelor politice ale crearii identitatii nationale, si ulterior, a statului national, presa romana a trait decenii de-a randul ca prizoniera a unui asemenea ideal misionar si a consecintelor derivate din el. A fost si a continuat sa fie o presa cu o puternica aureola intelectuala si (si cu tendinte intelectualiste), o presa facuta din oameni care doreau sa-si afirme o vocatie si sa-si confirme personalitatea, talentul, harul, norocul, o presa care, in momentele cheie ale istoriei ei (si ale istoriei nationale), si-a atribiut un rol militant de promovare a unei cauze sau de demolare a alteia. In ultima instanta, o presa cu o identitate incerta, penduland intre atasamente politice evidente si rabufniri agresive de autonomie, intre aspiratia literara si tentatia senzationalismului ieftin, intre morga elitista si populism, intre onestitate si coruptie, intre devotiune fata de un ideal de responsabilitate civica si arivismul grobian.Valori si idealuriPe acest fond, valorile irationale precum inspiratia, talentul, clipa de har, norocul- si nu valorile rationale de tip constiinta profesionala, norme deontologice, categorii de analiza specifice acestui domeniu, tehnici de lucru- au constituit termenii de referinta in conturarea "portretului" jurnalistului autohton. Altfel spus, exercitiul jurnalistic s-a definit ani de-a randul prin improvizatie, si nu prin proceduri. Ceea ce a insemnat ca jurnalismul a fost cel mai adesea conceput, atat de cei care il practicau, cat si de cei care beneficiau de produsele sale, ca o simpla indeletnicire si nu ca o profesie. Una din consecintele acestei "mosteniri" a istoriei a fost faptul ca locul de formare si pregatire specific pentru aceasta meserie nu a fost fixat in mediul academic (asa cum se intampla in toate profesiile "respectabile"), ci in redactii. Ceea ce a avut drept consecinta o anemiere a elementelor de cultura profesionala, ambiguitatea criteriilor identitare si un anti- intelectualism implicit, evident prin dispretul fata de activitatile de "obiectivare" profesionala, fie ele programe de formare (invatamant, master, dosctorat, open university, scoli vocationale), fie lectura lucrarilor de specialitate, fie forumuri de dezbatere a problemelor cu care se confrunta profesia, etc. Ideologia acestei bresle, in Romania poate mai mult decat in alte tari, a sanctionat experienta directa si invatarea "la locul de munca", invatare bazata pe reproducerea activitatilor desfasurate de cei deja angajati. Este o filosofie formativa de tip "manufacturier", asemanatoare, la modul valorizant, celei practicate in arte, sau, la modul devalorizant celei cunoscute in agricultura sau in atelierele de mestesugarie.
