One thing that many Americans do not realize is how much religion plays a role in American lives, and how it has played a role in our presidents lives from the very beginning of our country to now
Barack Obama is seen as many things that he is not, much like how Washington is seen as a , Obama is seen by the media as a person that he is not, and people state crazy “facts” about him. One of these “facts” is that he is a muslim, this is not true, though many believe that it is. According to the NBC News article “Obama Sets the Record Straight on his Religion” the Obama family is active members of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago IL. When Obama was confronted about a chain email going around about him Obama reacted by saying:
I was sworn in with my hand on the family Bible. Whenever I'm in the United States Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. So if you get some silly e-mail ... send it back to whoever sent it and tell them this is all crazy. Educate (NBC News).
Although many do believe those chain emails that they get, no matter how crazy they sound, usually they aren't true. If you wouldn’t believe a chain letter saying that you will have bad luck for the next 7 years if you don’t forward it, then why would you believe one about the president? The fact of the matter is that no matter how you get your information, you need to double check it. Just like Obama said, “...Educate”
The email that Obama was addressing did have some truth to it though, but these small facts were taken completely out of context. Obamas Middle name is Hussein, and his father and step father were muslim, but he spent his childhood in catholic schools and not that he is older, is a christian. These catholic schools were in indonesia, which admittedly is a mostly muslim country, but as already stated, he spent his childhood in catholic schools, not a madrassa (NBC News). While this is drastically different than the childhood of washington, ___
When asked, Claire Ryterski a junior at Columbia High school, about how religion plays a part in todays society she stated, “It definitely plays a role in other people i knows lives, in my life it helps me keep track of how i want to live”. But when another student was asked, Kaleb Williams a sophomore at Columbia High School, he stated:
I don’t know i believe there are good and bad morals, and a good place and a bad place, but i dont call them heaven and hell. I don’t think Jesus makes your decisions I think jesus evaluates the decisions you made to let you go to the good place or bad place. (Kaleb Williams)
