Violence is a major issue in educational institutes. Over the years, school violence has continued to increase at an alarming rate. “Every year, 3 million young people in the United States fall victim to crimes at school. Almost 2 million of these incidents involve violence” (“The Challenge of School Violence”). Violence in schools must be prevented. Teachers and parents play a significant role in a student’s life, and they need to take a full on approach on having a healthy relationship with each student. A difference in a child’s attitude and behavior should instantly become recognized by a parent. Also, a child should feel comfortable confining in their parents with any problem they may be facing. Adolescents need to be taught how to deal with their issues without having to resort to violent acts. The home should be a safe haven. Parents also need to take on responsibility on what their kids are doing with their free time. According to the American Psychological Association, viewing violent acts through media has harmful effects on young people. Albert Bandura indicates through his research that, “Children learn behavior by watching and imitating others, and that the more violence children observe, the more aggressive and violent they act” (“Media Violence”). Restrictions and guidelines must be set when it comes to what media they are exposed to. Violent media should not be an option until they are well mature in knowing right from wrong. The violence displayed in today’s media and home environment can be easily reenacted by students at their school.
Teachers have the ability to shape student lives. “For most of the year, children spend more time at school than anywhere else other than their own home” (National Crime Prevention Council).
