Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel that was written at the end of the 18th century, before
Queen Victoria got the throne. It is a novel that weaves together themes like wealth, marriage and
Social status which were critical in the 18th century English society, during the time known as the Regency Period. The terms refers to England’s ruler between 1810 and 1820.
The novel takes place in the rural zone of England. The novel was set in Longbourn, England the specifics were Bingley’s home in Netherfield, Bennet’s home in
Longbourn, the home is found in the rural area of Hardfordshire, the Rosings Park in Kent County, the
Darcy’s estate in Pemberley, which is Derbyshire County and Meryton where the market was. The

The setting causes the reader to observe the difference by creating settings that capture the
Psychology of her characters and reflects social classes.
Significance of setting
First of all, the most significant setting in the novel is Rosings Park; this was used to clarify how the aristocratic English society was. Miss Lady Catherine De bourgh is distinguished in the way of dressing, manners and home. She is prejudiced against the Bennet family. The opulence and elegance of Rosings Park is used to intimidate those who visit, demonstrating the nature of Lady De Bourgh’s confrontational behavior. This is a clear example of the setting which reflects the upper and lower class.
Upper vs. Lower class
How can tell one, who is from the upper and who is from the lower class?
The author made a noticeable difference on how they acted, lived, dressed, and though. The upper class had an easy life, the life didn’t come hard for them. Women were dedicated to home and family, while the men worked and had good jobs, so they can afford a good education for their children and they can go more with arts, drama, music (playing instruments and singing). In contrast, the lower class used to work very hard and for little money, they experienced economic hardship, and the lack of money is linked with material scarcity which these children are expose in their life. Because the working class cannot afforded a good education the result is linked to underachievement of their children, their attitude to education and lack of enthusiasm to succeed in life. On the other hand, both had different speech patterns the upper class adopted elaborated speech code because they received a good education and they had properly speech as a result of their learning, and speech in the lower class had restricted speech code is a kind of short hand speech code and sometimes they did not understand outside their speech code.
