Pro Capital Punishment Essay

683 words - 3 pages

Capital punishment is a very controversial topic. As of 2013, the number of states still upholding the death penalty went down to thirty-two. What reasons do this states have for still continuing the death penalty you might be asking? Some people believe that the death penalty gives closer to the victims and their families. Some also believe that executing the inmate leads to reduced crime recurrence. Also, some people just believe that this is not a cruel act and it is justice and what that person deserves and “eye for an eye”, and with the new technology updates involving DNA testing, they believe that the possibility of wrongful conviction has and will decrease dramatically.
But then this is also the side of people being against capital punishment. People against protest that murdering someone because they have committed murder is is hypocritical. Some people believe that other factors play into the death sentence conviction such as ...view middle of the document...

The stakes is also executing an innocent man such as Todd Willingham. This man was said to have murdered his three children with arson on December 23, 1991. The court found him guilty and he was sentenced to death row. He was executed by lethal injection, on February 17, 2004. His last words were “I am an innocent man- convicted of a crime I did not commit. I have been persecuted for 12 years for something I did not do. From God’s dust I came and to dust I will return-so the earth shall become my throne…” (Malone) Years later, after his execution after a long investigation, investigators found him wrongly convicted of murder. This innocent man was put to death for a crime he did not commit.
Another stake ar hand would be the wardens, and prison staff psychological selves after executions. In an article, written by Michael Osofsky, in 2002, titled The Psychological Experience of Security Officers Who Work With Executions, Osofsky interviewed many security officers to see what the aftermath of the executions has done for them. In the article it stated, “Some deal with their stress by dissociative mechanisms. Some overly exhibit their distress through transient or persistent stress, guilt, and even depression.” There is no need of these officers to have to go through such psychological damage. This then can become a chain effect when and if that officer has a family at home. This is not fair to the officer who is just doing his job and has to suffer from it, or to his or her family who has to also see their loved one go through it. Execution then all of a sudden becomes not only just a punishment for the inmate but also the officers to who have to live with themselves after.

Another stake would be the cost factor. Cost becomes a stake because our world today almost just revolves around money. The three drugs to complete the lethal injection execution are so expensive that the cost of actually keeping an inmate in prison for life is actually less money then executing them.
To shine a new perspective on the topic. Would your views and opinions on the matter change if it was you and the stand and had just got sentenced to death row? What if it was a loved one who just been sentenced to death row? Would your views still stay the same?
