This paper will describe a workplace group setting where individual strengths and problem solving skills are used when applied to the on line group and decision making process. The Special Interest Group consulting team is one such group."A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable." (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993). Determining the ability of the team members to work together depends on the amount of online interaction and time they spend together. Our regional consulting team is a group of individuals with varying business expertise and experience who work together on a daily basis to help organizations save money by reducing expenses in a number of categories. In addition, there exists a Special Interest Group of consultants in each defined category who are assembled to share and communicate best practices to the entire network. I am part of two SIG groups within the organization. The special interest group (SIG) members are the recognized industry experts within their category. The SIG groups help other consultants with not only best practices, how to market the particular category and share case study data for benchmarking the category versus the network.The SIG team of our one category consists of 12 members; one SIG chair, one best practices analyst, and one marketing analyst. The leader of the group is the SIG chair who is responsible for providing the strategic direction of the category, develop industry relationships, provide information and advice to other consultants and act as a mentor to junior members. The SIG chair has both decision making and problem solving skills and strengths. In other words, the SIG chair can pass judgment on an issue "that is under consideration and the act of reaching a conclusion or making up one's mind." (Decision, n.d.). The problem solving skills are the ability to analyze problems and develop a plan of action.Another strength that the SIG chair has is the experience working in the industry for multiple years as both an expert and analyst manager. Therefore, the SIG chair can intelligently discuss the problem with other consultants and the suggested plan of action. The SIG chair also can understand the issue, determine solution criteria, establishing criteria or standards for a solution; identify possible outcomes; review the pros and cons of each suggestion from the consultant team and finally select the best option to solve the problem.The major drawback suffered by the SIG chair is the fact that he has been with the organization the longest and therefore, will be approached by other consultants for projects before others are considered. The SIG chair role is to recommend the best fitted SIG analyst for the project. This caused skepticism and distrust among those with less years.
