The Process of Writing
Throughout my whole life I have been taught to write many different ways and on how I should approach my writing assignments in and outside of class. But there was one particular method that was taught a lot more than others such as the five paragraphs method. Some assignments were very easy that I could write off the back of my head and some of the harder one’s I have think a lot more critically. All I ever did was follow the five paragraph process and nothing more. This is what I led to believe be my downfall in my writing skills because I was unable to use any other methods. So throughout my essay I will explain the steps of my writing process such as finding my personal space, understanding the difficulties, and changing my writing styles
Whenever I attempt to write a paper for an in class assignment I would make sure to always isolate myself from others and especially my phone. Those are the two things that would distract me and make me lose focus. I can multitask, but it’s just that if really I want my writing to be good and well thought and written out I would need my own personal space. After finding my comfortable zone I would start to just brainstorm ideas and write a few down on my paper so that I could remember my ideas. So depending on how much time I have I would make a “Shitty First Draft” which is just to plan out my ideas and get a feel of what I’m trying to say. Once I get this idea off then my next draft would be the final due to the time limit, but this is where I would make my ideas clear or whatever I am writing about. Then finally I would just go over and reread everything to make sure my spelling is correct and that I have correct grammar.
The hardest part of writing for me is probably starting my intro to what my subject or prompt is. I always want a catchy intro so I could grab the reader’s attention, but I think I put way too much time into it which waste a lot of time if it’s a timed write. I always panic when there is a timed write because I know I can’t think quickly enough forming like ideas to what I will talk about in the topic of my writing. I’m a type of writer who depends on a lot of time so I can actually plan everything out nicely so there can be also be a flow and order throughout my writing. But the only reason why I depend on so much time is because I’ve been so focused on the five paragraph process my whole life ever since elementary. In the article “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” Marie, Foley talks about the five paragraph method essay and how it’s still being taught in school from elementary to even high school. She explains to us that “Possibly the five-paragraph formula is a useful first step for beginning student writers. It helps them overcome writer’s block….but when taught as the only writing mode, the formula eventually creates a gulf between the students self and his or her written expression”(Foley 232). Knowing this method my whole life, it limited me from...
