I was going to write my speech but I had to eat dinner, and then do my nails. After that I had to brush my teeth, get changed and by the time I was done, I had to go to bed. I just couldn’t fit it into my schedule. I did get a bit of it done so here it is.
Procrastination, it’s defined as “the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention.” Kind of like how I wrote this speech, last minute. Psychologists say that it has something to do with stress of preparing or completing a task. Pressure makes people stressed about the outcome, therefore, they put it off to the last minute to complete or even start the task.
Perfectionists tend to be the ones procrastinating. They negatively impact their own actions by thinking too much about their previous failures. It leads to lower self-esteem and a lower chance of getting good feedback of your completed assignment. I think that procrastination is strange because wouldn’t doing your project last minute add onto the stress of getting it completed to the best of your ability?
I think that I have a problem with procrastination. Whenever I needed to do something, I’d tell myself that something else was more important. But I try to find ways to stop myself from procrastinating. I found 3 simple steps on how to overcome procrastination.
Step one, recognize when you’re procrastinating. For example, I am procrastinating right now by not going on with my speech and I just recognized that I’m procrastinating. Why am I procrastinating? That brings me to my second step, realizing why you’re procrastinating. Ask yourself “is this really necessary?” If you’re really procrastinating, chances are you’ll tell yourself it isn’t.
Step three, think of ways to stop procrastinating. Sometimes, the task bores you and it is hard for you to concentrate. If this is the case put on your favourite song or get a friend or family member to keep motivating you when they catch you dozing off. If you’re procrastinating because you’re scared of the outcome. Tell yourself that you are going to do your best and the result doesn’t change that....
