Procrastination Essay

1085 words - 4 pages

"Your homework is due on Friday" my first grade teacher would explain."Well it's only Monday, I'll do it later", I told myself.I will be the first to say that I am a procrastinator (and I am proud of this too). This is a pattern that I have chosen when I was young and still follow even today. If something is due, I will probably do it the day before, or the actual day that it is due. Teachers may say, "Don't wait until the last minute", but I work well under pressure. I always seem to put things off until there is only a minimum of time left. It seems as though there is always something or anything that is just more fun or interesting than doing schoolwork. I would also say that I am not too bad of a procrastinator. I find that after all these years of procrastinating that I have acquired great time-management skills. These include knowing exactly how much time is needed to complete the project and knowing when the appropriate time to start arrives. In addition to the time management skills, I have also found that I can form an argument quickly. This aids in me being able to wait until the last minute."Procrastination is the thief of time." This is how Edward Young describes procrastination. According to Wordsmith the definition of procrastinate is "to put off needlessly; postpone." The Counseling Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign states that procrastination technically refers to the avoidance of a specific task or work, which needs to be accomplished. I couldn't have said it better myself. Professor Linda Sapadin has identified 6 different types of procrastinators (Ferrari). First are the "Dreamers" whom desperately want life to be easy and free from pain and cherish the notion that they're special, that they don't have to play by the rules. Second are the "Worriers" whom has a narrow comfort zone and paralyzes himself with anxiety when faced by risk or change. They see an endless stream of "what ifs" about hypothetical situations, all with negative consequences. Third are the "Defiers" whom resents authority but expresses the rebellion covertly. They are generally unhappy and proud of it. Fourth are the "Crisis-Makers" whom goes out of the way to create drama, going from one behavioral extreme to the other. They under-react when they first receive the assignment, then overreact when there is a lot of work to be done to meet a deadline. Fifth are the "Perfectionists" whom self-esteem is on the line every time they do anything. They see everything in all-or-nothing terms. As if the task they're working on is a failure. They feel as they do not measure up to people. The sixth is the "Over doer" whom doesn't think of himself as a procrastinator because he is always busy. They are people pleasers, the guys who never say no to taking on more work. There are many causes that are associated with procrastination. The first may be a poor distinction between urgency and priority (Knott). At first, a procrastinator may attend to...
