Pros And Cons Of Parenting Styles

1350 words - 5 pages

Have you ever felt trapped by your parents? Maybe there was even a time that you really wanted to go out with a friend and your parents kept telling you one thing, “No.” Why is it that they always say that? Are they afraid themselves of what may or may not happen? Well let me tell you something, the way that i was brought up, is a lot like the article “The Allegory of The Cave” by Plato. The main idea of this article is about how a few prisoners were trapped inside a cave. The prisoners were only aloud to face one direction and they were not aloud to move from left or right. They just sat forward and could not even turn their heads to see what may be beside them. These prisoners were taught certain things and ideas that others have portrayed to them. Those ideas were played out like a puppet show, but instead of using a curtain directly in front of their audience, they used a fire. The fire produced shadows, which were reflected upon the wall the prisoners faced. The prisoners watched each movement of every shadow. Each and everyone of them only had knowledge of what each shadow showed them. Than one day, a prisoner escaped from the cave seeing the world for what it actually is, not just from what someone has told them. Which again, relates very similarly to parenting. Some parents do not allow their children to be exposed to certain things in the world. Children can not learn anything more unless they go and experience things for themselves. Parents teach them the things they already know and the things they have learned previously, not teaching them anything new. Different parenting styles have an effect on every single child. Whether it is disciplinary strategies, warmth and nurturance, certain communication,or even expectations of a child's maturity and control. There are four different parenting styles I feel that could affect why they do not want their child to experience more than what they are teaching them. Those parenting styles are, authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, and sadly uninvolved parenting. Each parenting style is very different in their own way, but may have both success and downfall.

The authoritarian parenting style happens to be where the “parents are stricter and create more rules that they expect their children to follow. If a child does not follow the rules, it normally results into a punishment. Many parents fail to explain the reasoning being those rules.” (Cherry, Kendra) This type of parenting is commonly used every day and many parents expect their child to obey their rules, but the parent themselves do not give a valid explanation as to why the rule is that. This is very similar to Plato’s article because they made all of the prisoners just sit inside the cave and did not explain to them why they could not go outside the cave. In this case, a prisoner finally rebelled and left the cave to explore the outside world. This then comes to that same question of “why?” Why do...
