Pros And Cons Of School Uniforms

1064 words - 4 pages ✓ Expert Reviewed

In today’s society more school are converting to wearing uniforms. They’re people who agree and people that disagree with this converting; however, is wearing school uniforms good or bad for kids? School shouldn’t be about fashion and expression, it needs to be about education; furthermore, uniforms are one of the ways to lead education back to the forefront once again for schools and it not be about who’s wearing what. The answers you will receive from some kids and parents will be yes, for the others it will be no. Research has been done to prove that wearing uniforms help some kids, but what is that research based on? Kids are constantly changing and growing, learning about school, the world, and their bodies. So much is going on with kids. We want them to do well in school, that’s the ultimate goal, so they can be successful in life. Will the use of school uniforms help them to be successful in life?
One of the first cons of wearing school uniforms is that kids lose their freedom of expression. Self-expression is important for kids to have. If kids aren’t expressing themselves through clothing they will in other routes, such as the wearing of makeup, the use of jewelry, tattooing and piercing. Wearing uniforms stop kids from being unique, having their own individuality. Uniforms detract from a child’s individuality by forcing them all the wear the same clothes.
The price of uniforms is a financial burden to lower income families, putting a pain in families’ pockets. They’re families that use hand-me-downs and buy used clothing, which doesn’t help out for school. It also has to be reminded that school isn’t all day. After school you’re going to have kids rushing home to put on their other clothes. Kids are still going to want the $150 pants and shoes from stores, now you have to buy school uniforms too. The initial idea of wearing uniforms may seem to be cheaper; however, it only adds to the cost families have to pay for clothes.
I disagree that wearing school uniforms are bad for the school systems; furthermore, I believe that school uniforms are essential for a productive school environment, with the goal once again being education and learning. People that disagree with uniform say kids won’t have freedom of expression if they have to wear uniforms. Uniforms are the definition of unity. Every team wears a uniform and it’s the same for each player on the team. The military wears uniform, different ones to identify the branches. Police and some companies all wear uniforms. With uniforms you aren’t allowed to wear certain things. It’s not about taking someone freedom of expression away, it’s about looking professional. School main purpose is to reach your minds and open it to the word of knowledge; however, wearing school uniforms also opens up the learning of being discipline and looking at people pass their clothes. That’s what uniforms do, help people know a person pass what they have on and it represents...
