“Protecting Yourself Against Sexual Crimes” Essay

Many people become or have already been a victim of some sort of sexual crime or violence. In the U.S and around the world people every day are a victim of some sort of crime whether it is sexual or not. The places you go and the place where you live may seem safe but, in truth it’s not always safe as it seems, you should always be prepared.

No matter whom you are or where you go, you should be aware of these things and know how to protect yourself against violence or a sexual crime before it happens. Where do these “Sexual Crimes” and violence occur? Why do they occur? Who is at risk? Most importantly how can you protect yourself against these crimes?

The number one rule for protecting yourself is keeping safety in mind , and not thinking that “Oh it’s never going to happen to me” regardless if it will or not, you should still be aware of what could happen. You should try to be safe everywhere you go, especially on the streets.

Protecting yourself on the street isn’t that complicated, all you have to do is stay alert, for example map out a route that you walk often and familiarize yourself with it. Know where you are going and where the dangerous spots are on your route. Try to dress practical, like in sandals or flip flops, something that would be easy to run in.

Try not to “Overload” and carry to much stuff that you don’t need, try to carry what is really essential, like a cellphone. For added protection if you can, carry around pepper spray or a Taser. One of the main things of street safety is watching your back literally… you should stay alert and make sure you’re not being followed.

If you think you are being followed, walk near a curb or if practical, into traffic and attract attention. If you’re being followed by a car, simply walk the opposite direction. Being safe on the street is just the half of protecting yourself. Being safe in your car is another way to prevent...
