Every cheerleader gets upset when someone tries to dismiss cheerleading as a sport. “I know I did”, although cheerleading fits the definition of a sport as stated in the Oxford dictionary. According to the Oxford dictionary, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or other for entertainment. Have you ever been to a cheerleading competition? Having you not noticed how physical each routine are? Does this not entertain you? If you can honestly answer yes to any of that question, I believe the truth is you understand some of the elements of cheerleading can qualify as a sport. Why do most athletes receive scholarships, for me because they have with stand the physical endurance for that sport and is on an elite level over others. Overall, the physical demands of cheerleading can be very similar to football, therefore; proving that the physical exertion is on par with a “sport”.
If you have only seen cheerleaders at football games and basketball games you may not be aware of the competitive side of cheerleading. Cheerleading.org list the many elite cheerleading competitions that happens yearly and there are many more on a much smaller scale. Most sports are competitive, where you will compete against several teams or individuals. I also read that any competitive sport must be governed by rules that is define by time, space, and a purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared. In competitive cheer judges score the efforts of the team on a system similar to gymnastics. However, gymnastics exercises are performed on floor mats and specialized equipment that entail the skills of tumbling and balancing.
