I chose this topic because in a movie, I saw a potato clock which got me interested in fruit electricity, so I decided to produce electricity from citrus fruits. There are a lot of types of fruits in this world and one of them is citrus fruits. Citrus fruits are from plants in a Rue family. A Rue family is a family of flowering plants. Most citrus fruits come from 4 species from Southeast Asia. The name citrus came from a Greek word Cedar which means “sour fruits”. All citrus fruits are acidic fruits. Citrus fruits are fruits with vitamin C. Citrus fruits are known as having a sweet smell and a juicy pulp. A pulp is a soft wet, shapeless mass of material. Fruits that are known as citrus fruits have a tough and hard skin and juicy pulp inside such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and tangerines. These fruits contain more acid and are mostly important due to their acidic properties. This is what a citrus fruit is and that’s what makes a fruit citrus. There’s a lot of interesting facts about electricity but do you know that electricity could also be produced by citrus fruits? Any type of citrus fruit can produces electricity when they get properly connected with the electrical circuit. The citric acid and the water produced by the fruit, acts as an electrolyte which allows it to flow through the electric circuit. An electrolyte is any substance that contains free ions that conducts electricity. An ion is a molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. In order to produce electricity from citrus fruits you need 2 types of metal “Zinc and Copper”. The copper allows the acid in the fruit to start reacting with the oxygen to form water. This causes the copper ions and free electrons. The zinc metal blends into the acid to form zinc ions and 3 free electrons. The 2 free electrons rushes towards the copper ion and balances them. All of this releases the electricity to flow through the objects and produce 1 volt of electricity per fruit.
