Multi-factorial model is that there are many factors such as biological, psychological and cultural that cause health and illness. Biological factors are things like a person's age, family history, gender and ethnicity. Social-cultural facts such as access to health care, social economic status and family circumstance. Environmental factors such as water quality, natural disasters, pollution, and types of living and work environments. Behaviors such as smoking, diet, drinking alcohol, safety practices and going to the doctor or dentist are other factors. Stressors such as daily hassles and major life changes are other facts in this model.These relate to the diagnosis of illness because many of these things may be able to be changed but many can not. Some of the factors make you more prone to certain diseases or health problems. Behavior such as smoking may lead to lung cancer. A doctor knowing that a person smokes may bring them to finding lung cancer earlier than if they did not know that the person smoked cigarettes.A health problem that one might have is getting headaches. Head aches are the most common stress related problem. There are two types of headaches; a tension headache and a migraine headache. Persistent stress may lead to the muscles in the neck, head and scalp to tens up and cause a tension headache. Tension headaches usually happen gradually. The other type of headache is a migraine. Migraines happen suddenly they may last for hours or days. Migraines appear to be related to the change of flow to the brain. This change of blood flow then "may be affected by imbalances in the neurotransmitter serotonin. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers in the nervous system." (Nevid & Rathus, 2005, p. 132)"Triggers for migraine headaches include many factors such as stress, hormonal fluctuations, changes in barometric pressure, exposure to glaring lights, pollen, use of certain drugs, and ingestion of certain chemicals such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) (used to enhance flavor), and even chocolate and ripened cheese." (Nevid & Rathus, 2005, p. 132) To help control migraines one needs to figure out what triggers them. Then avoid those triggers. By avoiding triggers it may help prevent the migraines.Headaches can be treated with aspirin or other drugs. Relaxation and breathing training may help treat the headaches. These techniques reduce stress and strain on the body and cause the body to relax. This relaxation may help eliminate or reduce how bad the headache is. "Migraine or other types of recurrent headaches are significant stressors that can lead us to catastrophize our situation, to heap blame or criticism on ourselves, or to withdraw from social interactions or fail to make use of social support we may have available. In so doing, we may further compound our pain and emotional distress."
