The role of ethics in public administration is built on the administration; administrators should be value-free when they implement public policy. Most of us do not understand the problems and situations that administration has to deal with day in and day out. Now we would like to think that administrators make the best possible ethical choices but that is far from being the case. Administrators are supposed to use everyday values and morals with setting up and finalizing policies and again that is not the case always. The government is broad and has many important responsibilities to the community and its societies. As public servants they are analyzed not only by citizens but surprisingly by government officials; as wasteful, over compensated, and idle.
“Former Senator from Illinois, Paul Douglas said that” Instead, most men want a life of integrity and goodwill in which public officials are stewards rather than masters and treat their jobs as a means of helping people rather than dominating them.” (Wikipedia) He goes on to state that our lives can be directly affected and with the government being so big we cannot be satisfied with the idea that our public officials do not uphold a level of decency to represent our administration as a whole.
Once someone makes the decision to enter the public eye in an administration, all of their personal life is now open and is pretty much on public record. Different aspects are up for public record: views, health, financial, and misconduct whether be sexual in nature or not. When they first decide to be in the public eye they should make it known up front where their views lie and what they support so that there are no conflicts of interest and that they are not taken out of context. When it comes to health public officials need to be up for the challenge. A perfect example of this is how the first lady, Michelle Obama, and how her goal/involvement she has in pushing today’s youth to be as healthy as her family is. She has made a big part of her duties as first lady to opening the door for more children and people to eat healthier and exercise regularly.
