Public relations as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary (2011) is “the business of inducing the public to have understanding for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution.” The use of public relations by government leaders is not a new management skill. In the United States public relation by government leaders is as old as the country itself. From the times of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, there have been public relations issues and political agendas that have been presented to the United States citizens. Early revolutionary public relation issue had to deal with the formation of the United States as a sovereign country and the banishment of the King of Great Britain. Though, many people immigrated to United States to escape the rule of Great Britain, it took public relations from the founding fathers to establish a continental army and polices to protect the newly formed country from the invasion and taxation of Great Britain. Public relations have always and will always be at the eye of the beholder.
Until the invention of the mass media, in the form radio during World War 1, the profession of public relations was relatively unknown. It was then that public relations in the form of subliminal messages and propaganda started to emerge as a trend of coercion and control by government leaders (Shafritz, 2011). Merriam-Webster dictionary (2011) defines propaganda as “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.” Propaganda is used to in all forms of government, from presidential candidates to political party supporters. Propaganda by means of public relations from government can be of value to the leadership of our government. When the citizens are unwilling to research and make informed decisions about their government and leaders, they tend to fall back to what they have heard and what they felt based on the propaganda that was presented to them in mass media. Failure of voting citizens to educate themselves on topics, policies, and candidates can lead to ignorant society that is influenced by the unlimited mass media that is available to the public.
The analysis of public relations and propaganda is relatively new with the invention of the internet and ability for the public to research the issues of government leaders at the stroke of a keyboard. As a society we are able to educate ourselves on the issues, policies, and candidates with the stroke of a keyboard and now from our cellular telephones. With the stroke of keyboard we are able to research propaganda that is presented to us on our televisions and over the radio.
