For any business to be successful it most be able to market itself to it's audience that it is trying to attract. Businesses spend billions of dollars each year on advertisements that they think would attract the clientèle that they are trying to reach. Every business has a marketing department that's sole job is to be able to market the business. These departments are responsible for the public relations with clients and consumers. One of the earliest definitions of Public Relations was coined by Edward Bernays. According to him, "Public Relations is a management function which tabulates public attitudes, defines the policies, procedures and interest of an organization followed by executing a program of action to earn public understanding and acceptance" (2007).In my opinion Public relations is what s keeps a business in business. By this I mean without a decent public relations campaign where the people in charge of running the campaign keeps clients, and consumers on an even keel with one another with what the public demands and what the business is willing to produce to keep the public happy and wanting to come back for more. The problem with Public relations is that there can be so many different meanings of its definition and to have all businesses using the same meaning is almost virtually impossible.According to The Practice of Public Relations defines public relations as a distinctive management function which helps establish and maintain mutual lines of communications, understanding, acceptance, and cooperation between an organization and its publics; involves the management of problems or issues; helps management to keep informed on and responsive to public opinion; defines and emphasizes the responsibility of management to serve the public interest; helps management keep abreast of and effectively utilize change, serving as an early warning system to help anticipate trends; and uses research and sound and ethical communication techniques as its principal tools (2004).If you were to look up the meaning of Public Relations with the Public Relations Society of America though you would get a totally different meaning though. The Public Relations Society of America list Public Relations as; public relations helps our complex, pluralistic society to reach decisions and function more effectively by contributing to...
