In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, the actors who play Rosencrantz and Hamlet both exhibit qualities which make them great actors. On Friday, April 4th, I saw Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard. The play is an adaptation from the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. In the play, the king orders two men, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern, to look after their childhood friend, Hamlet. Eventually, Hamlet creates trouble in Elsinore and must be escorted to England by his two friends.
Costuming is necessary to the play. It allows for each character to be unique as well as show their relationships to one another. Color and patterns are essential components of costuming for these reasons. The costumes of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have earthy tones. Ophelia and Hamlet both wear some variation of blue. Gertrude and Claudius, both, wear black or dark colors. The costumes are analogous to one another to reveal that each character has a close relationship with the other. Likewise, the colors and patterns of their costumes reveal the characters’ social class. Guildenstern and Rosencrantz have earthy tones to reveal that they are of a lower class. This could relay that they do some type of labor or work. Gertrude and Claudius have shiny material on their costumes to depict royalty. Likewise, their crowns are different from the crowns that the Tragedians use. The king and queen’s crowns are black and unique to their character. The Tragedians’ crowns are normal crowns that one would expect kings and queens to use. Ophelia has a costume which hints that she is a part of the upper class. Her costume has shiny blue material coming off of her dress. The colors and patterns used for the costumes of the Tragedians sets them apart from the rest of the cast. Many of the “actors” have dark costumes to show that they are not as important as other characters. Alfred’s costume is not like the rest of the actors because of the joke that they make him dress up like a woman. The Player’s costume is very bright and colorful to emphasize that he is the leader of the actors, who are not like common people of the time period. The costumes also reveal information about the time period the characters are placed in. The costumes that most of the characters wear appear as clothing that would be worn during the Middle Ages. For instance, Ophelia wears a long dress with a headband of flowers on her head. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wear long capes and hats that appear to be from the Middle Ages. Costumes enhance the experience of the play by making the actors aesthetically pleasing to look at. Likewise, it helps the audience understand the play more efficiently.
Another component which affect theater is set design. It aids the play by establishing the setting of the play and the context the play is being interpreted in. Likewise, it gives the actors a place to perform their actions. The play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, uses a design which hints...
