Racheal Carson’s Legacy English 1301 Research Paper

1234 words - 5 pages

Carson book, Silent Spring criticizes organic farmers for using environmentally hazardous chemicals and illustrates devastation these chemicals wreak upon both animals and humans. In one of the chapters in her book, she discusses alternative method of insect control; to control insects, farmers can introduce their natural enemies, introduce their natural disease, and introduce parasite that could kill them. This book has caused a major shift in public consciousness about the environment. Why is Racheal Carson’s discovery still important till today? I believe that Carson’s legacy needs to continue because there is still global warming, there are still people who need to be informed of healthy lifestyle, and because the resources such as crude oil are not going to be around forever.
The existence of global warming is one the reasons Carson’s legacy needs to continue. The Federal Act Law that protects our environment has set up an environmental protection agency since 1970s to regulate the level of pollutants in the environment because Carson suggested that it should be part of the human rights of citizens to be secure in their home against the intrusion of poison applied by other people (Boyd, David). Human activity is overloading the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other global emissions that trap heat, steadily drive up the planet’s temperature, and create significant and harmful impacts on health, our environment, and our climate. The ozone layer is depleting as a result of the air pollution that has brought about the direct contact with the sunlight. Natural gas from cars, trucks, and bikes which emits 0.6 and 2 pounds of carbon dioxide has brought about mutation in DNA of living things. The use of renewal energy like sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal energy has been used to prevent global warming. DISCUSS CARSON LEGACY PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING
According to data aggregated by the International Panel of Climate Change, emissions associated with renewable energy are minimal and do not influence the human health or cause global warming (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Wind emits only 0.02 to 0.04 pounds of carbon dioxide, solar 0.07 to0.2, geothermal 0.1 to 0.2, and hydroelectric between 0.1 and 0.5 producing less carbon dioxide to the environment that results to clean air (Navigant Consulting). Renewable electricity generation from biomass can have a wide range of global warming emissions depending on the resource and how it is harvested that can bring about erosion and migration of people. Sustainably sourced biomass has a low emissions footprint, while unsustainable sources of biomass can generate significant global warming emissions which have a significant effect on the environment like the greenhouse effect. In addition, a ground-breaking study by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory explored the feasibility and environmental impacts associated with generating eighty percent of the...
