Desmond Tutu says “I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of rights.” Desmond Mpilo Tutu is an honorable man who became increasingly frustrated with the racism corrupting all aspects of South Africa. Through this quote, he incorporates the message of freedom and how humanity doesn’t serve others because of their race, skin color, or complexion. Desmond Tutu believes that everyone should be equal and should be considered as one big family, a family that isn’t separated by segregation. Three years later he began to study theology and taught theology in South Africa. During this time he worked part-time for many churches, as he began to give lectures about the circumstances in South Africa. This led him to become an ordained priest in 1960 as an Anglican priest. He was appointed the Dean of St. Mary‘s Cathedral in Johannesburg and later became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. Desmond Tutu continued to study theology and earned his master’s and bachelor’s degree. He used his lectures to point-out the harsh circumstances of South Africa, through this he has received many peace and humanitarianism awards for his beliefs and messages of non-violence.
Desmond Mpilo Tutu’s personal experiences with prejudice as a young South African led him to become an ordained priest and build a peaceful movement for democracy against the violence of the government to vanquish the hated system of discrimination. As an established teacher, Desmond Tutu taught under the system of apartheid. This system meant that he could only teach in black schools because he was black, and the education black students received was much poorer than the education of white students. Black students were only allowed to go to school for three hours a day because they were expected to become servants for white people. They weren’t taught math or science, or other academic subjects because of the distorted system they lived in. Desmond Tutu didn’t want to become a collaborator in this scheme, so he found the solution in becoming a priest in the Anglican Church. This enabled him to lead peaceful marches as a response to the violence of the government. The strategy of divestment, with the help of protests by South Africans and people around the world, finally put an end to the corrupt system of apartheid.

Through Tutu’s peaceful marches and acts of non-violence, the abolishment of apartheid led to the restoration of human rights of black South Africans. Apartheid meant total control of government for the national party (NP), as many racist laws were passed. The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act and Immorality Act meant that marriages of mixed race were illegal. The Population Registration Act separated the colored-people into sections based on your ethnicity- white, colored, Native, or Asian. The last law that was put into action was the Bantu Education Act. This act meant that black students would receive poor education in comparison to white students, as they weren’t taught math or science. Desmond Tutu put an end to these laws as he used his religious views against apartheid and had earned equal rights for all of the citizens of South Africa.
