In Hughes's "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" he exemplifies how racism in America is rooted deeper in our society than we realize. Instead of embracing black culture and history, they'd subconsciously choose a life that fits in with white standards. Hughes states, "The present vogue in things Negro, although it may do as much harm as good for the budding artist, has at least done this: it has brought him forcibly to the attention of his own people among whom for so long, unless the other race had noticed him beforehand, he was a prophet with little honor." (Hughes) Black American’s especially those from the middle class choose to deny their heritage in order to fit in with themselves better. It is subconscious that other races want to associate with the white race because throughout history white people have had the spotlight. Only when society can embrace and recognize the differences in our culture and history can society thrive.
Gloria Steinem's article "Living the Revolution" is a feminist rant about a woman's role in 1970s society. Throughout the article Steinem cuts down myths that uphold and supports sexist ideals.
