When people turn on their televisions at home or they are watching television somewhere else, they will possibly find a reality show somewhere. Reality television shows have been on television for numerous years and are changing. Although reality television is wildly entertaining and popular, many young teens and adults look up to their favorite reality show actors and their lavish lifestyles and overdramatic antics. People who watch reality television regularly have different expectations and views on how the world actually works and feel differently about themselves. People follow their favorite reality show stars and it makes them want to change and leaving the rest of us wondering what reality actually is. Reality television isn’t real and should be banned because it makes people differently think about themselves.
Reality television shows are television programs in which real people have their lives continuously filmed either in their own homes or while they are put in various group situations. For entertainment... One well known example of this would be The Real world, which has been running on MTV since the early 90’s, where a chosen group of twenty something adults move into a house together for a short period of time. Others oppose banning reality television because they believe it gives them exactly what they want, an escape from the worries and boredom of everyday life. Just because something is popular does not make it good. Reality television is mostly vain or people exploiting themselves in a competition for money.
Not anyone can disagree that reality television has impacted on how people see themselves. People want to be like actors. Our society will wear makeup, go on drastic diets, and even go as far as plastic surgery just to be like actors. In the article “The Influence of Plastic Surgery “Reality Television” on Cosmetic Surgery Patient Expectations and Decision Making” research says, “Some plastic surgeons report that their patients prepare for plastic surgery by watching it on television” (Plastic Surgery Reality Television 316). This statement means when people watch reality television show stars on television getting plastic surgery they want to be like actors and get plastic surgery too to change who they are. “Patients seeking plastic surgery have reported that positive outcomes seen on television influenced and motivated them to pursue a plastic surgery procedure” (Plastic Surgery Reality Television 316). This means when people see the good outcomes of plastic surgery that reality stars get it makes them want to go out and get plastic surgery also. When reality stars change their looks it influences people to go out and get plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures to change themselves too.
When people see rich reality stars on television it makes them want the lavish lifestyles that celebrities have. Rich reality stars have many great things that other people don’t have such as: big houses, nannies, parties, and V.I.P....
