Reasons Why Children Should Not Always Listen To Their Parents

973 words - 4 pages

There is often quite the conflict when discussing the idea on whether children should always listen to their parents. Of course, there are some things that parents with simply more common sense, wisdom, and foresight just know better than young, inexperienced, and foolish kids. But with everything in life, there is a line. Just as a parent knows, eating too much candy will give a person a stomach ache. But children often realize the best way to keep people interested is to make it new and fashionable. So certainly, there are some reasons why children shouldn’t listen to their parents, as shown by Romeo and Juliet.
The first reason why children shouldn’t listen to their parents is sometimes parents think they know what is best for their children but the choice they made doesn’t make the kids happy. The most common and relevant example of this is when Old Capulet tries to force Juliet into a marriage with the Count Paris. Of course through the eyes of the Capulets, Paris and the city of Verona, this marriage is a great alliance. But to Juliet, this option is absolutely retched. She at the young age of fourteen isn’t looking to marry since A) she is already happily married to Romeo, B) doesn’t want to be married to an old man like her mother and C) realizes that this option will not make her happy. In Act III, Scene v, Lines 118 right after Lady Capulet mentions the pre arranged marriage to Paris, “He shall not make me there a joyful bride!” Here she is saying that they will not get her to go to the marriage happily or at all for that matter. Surely, children shouldn’t always listen to their parents because only they know what will make them happy sometimes, just like in Juliet’s case.
Another reason why kids shouldn’t always obey their parents is a view on morality and ethics as shown by Juliet. After Romeo and Juliet’s night together, they were officially married in the eyes of the lord. Juliet realizes this and so when her parents propose the idea of her getting married to Paris, she says absolutely not. Especially when they say that Friar Lawrence would be marrying them in the same church she and Romeo tied the knot in. Juliet realized that even though this would be the easy way out of her issue with Romeo, it would be wrong in the eyes of God and her own ethics would be under serious conflict. In Act III, Scene v, line 117 Juliet says, “Now by Saint Peter’s Church, and Peter too.” She says this after she comes to consciousness about who and where she would be married. However, even though the whole conflict could be resolved if she explained the scenario, but this of course wouldn’t be an option...
