Le théâtre de l’absurde est un genre théâtral qui rejette les valeurs et les composants du théâtre traditionnel (2). Le célèbre critique du drame, Martin Esslin, était le premier à utiliser le terme “le théâtre de l’absurde”. Au contraire des pièces du théâtre traditionnelles, Esslin a décrit les pièces du théâtre de l’absurde comme contenant des images qui pourraient ressembler à des cauchemars. Dans les pièces traditionnelles (2), il y pourrait avoir des images cauchemardesques, mais avec un intrigue logique et un dénouement. Dans le théâtre de l’absurde, il y a du chaos. C’était pour cette raison que Ionesco a appelé La Cantatrice chauve une “anti-pièce”. Il n’y a pas du tout de logique, il y a seulement des chose bizarres et chaotiques.
Dans une pièce du théâtre traditionnel (2), il doit y avoir toujours un début, qu’est-ce qui se passent au milieu, et un dénouement à la fin. Par exemple, la pièce Belleville, qui a été écrit par Amy Herzog, est une pièce qui conforme aux règles traditionnelles (2) du théâtre. En séquence, on voit les complications qui créent du suspense, les développements, suivi par une crise, et finalement le dénouement. La chronologie est un aspect théâtral traditionnel (2) auquel Ionesco a refusé de se conformer (1). Aucune des scènes dans La Cantatrice chauve ne suit la chronologie. Ionesco utilise la pendule pour démontrer un manque certain de linéarité. Elle sonne 17 fois, 7 fois, puis 3 fois- tous pendant la même scène.
