Most of these sources of information focus on past animation styles that lead up to the animation styles of today. The articles pertaining to that are “Dissecting Bambi: Multiplanar Photography, the Cel Technique, and the Flowering of Full Animation”; “Animating Quadrupeds: Methods and Applications”; and “An Interview with Geoff Marslett of Swerve Pictures”. These articles mostly describe the process of animation techniques, such as cel techniques, 3-D software, computer graphics, and stop motion, and how animators create the beautiful and complexly made films that are available today. These articles’ thesis emphasizes their animation topic’s contribution to animation today and how revolutionary it was at the time. There are also interviews on people who animated certain works and their experiences with evolving techniques and methods. The other articles research theories on styles of animation and possible future directions for animated works. “Interactive Character Animation Using Simulated Physics: A State-of-the-Art Review” talks about the use of physics simulations for interactive character animation and the many recent publications that demonstrate tremendous improvements in visual quality and usability.
The collective research is primarily qualitative, which is important to the research because the research needs to describe as many aspects of animation as possible. This level of quality is important for obtaining the best theory on where animation techniques are heading and what will be possible and popular in the future. Quantity is important to this research as well because there are many techniques to look over and study. It is important to look over as many techniques as possible to fully understand animation and the complexities that are involved. The literature gives a fuller and better understanding on animation from the perspectives of people who study and create it; this makes this research that much more real and valid. These articles also give insight on the ideas of scientists who believe that animation is going in a scientific direction. This is a potential future to look forward to in regards to animation.
The research that was accumulated for the sake of finding animation trends will help to build a timeline on where animation came from and where it is going. Knowing about the animations of the past help give insight to how they contributed to works today and whether those techniques are still valuable or not. This is important for an accurate prediction on what will be popular in the future and what technologies will be available.
This research also consists of interviews from people who are in the business of animation and their journey throughout the years, where animation is constantly evolving. This research will be important when one is finding out more about animation in depth and what is possibly sitting on the horizon in regards to animation.
