Throughout the course of Multicultural History our class took an investigative eyepiece to the beginnings of racial disparity in the United States. The course took into account the original settlers who colonized the Eastern coast of the country which lead to Eurocentric tendencies, colonist interactions with Native Americans and the eventual overpowering and destruction of much of their culture, the introduction of slavery that became the economic backbone of this country, African Americans’ journey through slavery and Jim Crow to civil equality, the expansion of the United States, and the influx of immigrants. All of these factors played substantial roles in the formation of the today’s society. In addition to having a structured forum of discussion about these topics in lecture, the course contained a Service-Learning component which aimed at presenting students with real-world examples of remnants left behind with issues relating to these racial inequalities and tensions. These issues are associated with the aforementioned events that have created a society in which racial inequality persisted for hundreds of years while the public accepted labeling non-white skin as something sub-human.
The League functions as an organization aimed at educating youth (primarily of color), low-income families, and those who live in conditions in which might lead them to disfranchisement. The League accomplishes their goals through social media campaigns by creating videos on Youtube, posting relevant content on Facebook, and discussing topics relevant to political participation on Twitter. The opinion of the League, or at least its Milwaukee leader Biko, is that to educate the youth about political participation is the path towards civil equality and the utilization of democratic citizenship. In a sense, the League of Young Voters is a rehashed and hybridized civil equality organization left over from the Civil Rights Movement, similar to organizations like pre-militant SNCC because it too was focused on youth. The greatest challenge facing an organization like the League of Young Voters is lack of voter participation (especially in youth), whether it be from absence of interest, scarcity of information regarding registration for voting and how to vote, or perhaps even situations causing disfranchisement of certain individual such as felons.
To fully grasp the struggles the League faces on a daily basis, the root of their problems are stemmed in the historical contexts of African American struggle in the Civil Rights Movement beginning since the era of Jim Crow. Jim Crow was marked by racial violence, the beginning of legal segregation created by Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, threat of slavery as a punishment for breaking outlandish laws that only blacks could infringe upon, and the greatest impact on today’s society: disfranchisement and battling Eurocentric Americas. The path to destroying the devices of disfranchisement such as poll taxes, grandfather...
