Reflection Using Gibb’s Reflective Cycle Essay

According to Howatson-Jones (2016) reflection is identified as a “transformative process that changes individuals and their actions, and a way to reach awareness of how and why things have occurred”. Reflection is a process of examining one’s own experience and recognising alternatives and/or strategies to improve the similar experience in the future (Bulman and Schutz, 2013). Reflective practices enable the nurses to develop an effective understanding of their role as a practitioner and makes appropriate links between practice and theory by assessing the health care related experience (McKinnon, 2016). As per Bulman and Schutz (2013) there is not any universally accepted definition for a reflective practice. However, Johns (2013) has defined it as a process that enables a nurse to assess their own nursing practices for identifying factors that can hinder or improve the nurse-patient interaction and/or nurse-colleague interaction. Thus, allowing the nurses to expose contradictions in practice and develop effective therapeutic relationships. To carry out a reflective practice effectively, it is essential that the user should have access to their tacit knowledge (Lloyd Hancock & Campbell 2011). Furthermore, Lloyd Hancock & Campbell (2011) have identified tact knowledge as skills and knowledge that nurses have inside their heads, but is not accessed easily. Reflective practices allow a nurse to develop and easily access their own tacit knowledge (Moule Aveyard & Goodman 2016). In addition, reflective practices aid nurses to be competent leaders in a clinical setting, and factors on the quality of care (Bulman & Schutz 2013). Similarly, it allows them theoretical evidence and experience, as the basis on future events in a clinical setting (Bulman & Schutz 2013).
In order to carry out a reflective practice, several frameworks were considered. Driscoll’s model of reflection was rejected, as the model does not offer in-depth assessment of an event (Callara 2008). Although, the model is very simple to use, but this simplicity has been criticised as the weakness of the model (Callara 2008). John’s model of reflection offers a structured approach for conducting a reflective practice; however, the model recommends the use of a notebook, which was not needed in this event (Mohana Cotrell & Wall 2016). Moreover, John’s model supports the notion that a learner should work very closely with the supervisor during an event, but this can hinder the learner’s ability to take initiatives (Ian Wild & Nair 2014). Likewise, Ian Wild & Nair (2014) criticised John’s model for not offering an in-depth analysis. Thus, this model was rejected. Gibb’s reflective cycle (1988) is widely used by the health care providers to reflect on their practices (Zuzelo 2010).
