Reflective Essay

Before I started this class I never knew what sociology was. I thought I knew, but I actually didn’t. I thought it was some boring study about the society that we live in, but I was proven wrong by this course. Through many different concepts taught I have been able to understand what sociology really is, and how to apply it to my daily life. There were many topics that we talked about in class that I can apply to my life be it school, work, home. Some of the many topics we talked about that really spoke to me were sexuality, race, and gender.
Sexuality was one of my favorite topics of the class. I say this because it was the one I was most interested in, and wanted to learn more about. Because of my background I had a limited view on sexuality. This was based upon my culture and my religion. During the course I learned about what sexuality was and the different types of sexual orientations. Many of the things taught during these lessons were an eye opener for me. For example, previously I did not recognize a difference between sex and gender. I now know that there is a difference so I look at it differently. It also made me look at certain values and beliefs that I had regarding sexuality as well.
Race was also another one of my favorite topics of the class. I feel like I can relate to this topic more than any other one that we have discussed through the course. Through race we have talked about racial profiling, deracialization, and many other subtopics. As a minority I experience a lot of the problems that are faced in our society. For example, being a young black female, I experience more discrimination than a young white female or a young white male. Because I experience things like this in the real world, I think it is important to learn about this stuff in sociology. It helps gives better understanding through connections.
Gender was another topic that was important to me as well. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about gender roles and masculinity and femininity. I was learning about these...
