The renaissance sparked an influential cultural movement by art, architecture, and music. Renaissance was a period of time from the 14th to the 17th century that affected Europe. During the renaissance people learned art and literature. The renaissance was the period of transition, from the medieval to modern times. The renaissance began in Italy during the 14th century as early as the painters Giotto and Cimabue. During the Renaissance people witnessed “the discovery of the world” and the “discovery of the man.”

These artists focused on detail rather than depth. For example the paining “The holy trinity” by Masaccio you see three Devine Gods who make up the Christian idea of God within a Chapel. Jesus body appears to be held up by God who stands behind the cross. Jesus is symbolizing the Holy Spirit because he is a dove. The donors at the bottom of the painting are presenting patrons in renaissance art.

The music as well changed in the 15th century. People listened to English and Continental Composers at the church councils. One famous English composer was John Dunstable. He worked in England and in France. He wrote many religious songs. His music influenced many composers in France and in Burgundy.

The legacy of the Early Renaissance took place in the arts and in architecture, mostly because of humanistic learning. Architecture, painting and art became independent art forms. Fifteenth century architects were mainly inspired by the Greco-Roman tradition. For the next four hundred years classicism was ruling the architectural styles. Sculpturing male and female nudes were very common in the fifteenth century and were also influenced by the classical tradition. However Art was least influenced by the classical tradition. Paintings were mainly influenced by realism.

The high renaissance and early mannerism was the period between 1494-1564. Between 1494 and 1564, was one of the most creative periods in western history during Italy. During these seven years, three most influential artists flourished. Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo and a writer Machiavelli who was a legend. These people were geniuses. They affected the western art and influenced how we understand ourselves and the world. The high renaissance style and the mannerist style lasted through 1524 when Michelangelo died.

The leading writers of the high renaissance in Italy valued the Greco-Roman classics. They believed in Classicism that human nature is rational and good. One of the best stories of classicism in Renaissance literature was the poetry of the Venetian Gaspara Stampa. This was poetry was about sexual love and the moral worth of the lover.
