Renewable Energy: Solar Power Essay

1302 words - 6 pages

Renewable energy is energy that can be used over and over again. It never runs out. It is also better for the environment. I think that renewable energy is definitely an option for South Africa in the near future. There are many different forms of renewable energy and I’ll talk about the forms of renewable energy which would be most suited in South Africa.
Solar Power would probably be the most successful form of renewable energy in South Africa. The reason why I say this is because South Africa is a country that has a reputation for sunny weather. This fact is true as South Africa is the 5th sunniest country in the world1. There are various different ways in harvesting the sun rays to ...view middle of the document...

Hydropower is also a form of renewable energy. It can come from various water sources: waterfalls, tides, rivers and dams3. Most hydroelectric stations are from dams and there are many dams across South Africa to build hydroelectric stations. The way a hydroelectric station works is by water flowing through tunnels in the dam wall. The waters force turns the turbines inserted in the dam wall which drives a generator2. The Vaal dam could a perfect power supplier across Gauteng. There has also recently been a lot of rain in the past month in Gauteng and it could have been a perfect opportunity for a lot of power and electricity to be created as the Vaal dam had to open several gates to avoid flooding. Another form of hydropower is by using the tides. The water from the ocean pushes turbines which have been built underwater. The turbines then drive a generator to produce electricity4. This would also be a good form of renewable energy in South Africa as there are lots of suitable locations to build a tidal generator. In the Western Coast it would be a perfect place to build a tidal generator in the Knysna heads. The reason why I say this is because there is only a small channel for the water to get in and out from the ocean. This means that the tidal push and the tidal pull will be a lot stronger in this area. Another good area to build a tidal generator would be in Richards Bay. Like a solar water heater the initial price is very high. In fact building a hydroelectric dam is the most expensive form of renewable energy, but you have to remember that there after you start making a profit as the electricity is free.
Across the coast of South Africa another good opportunity of renewable energy would be using wind power. It generates electricity by the wind blowing a propeller round and round which turns a generator to produce electricity. Often the biggest problem with this form of renewable energy is that the wind is not reliable2 enough to supply power to your household constantly but wind power won’t be the only power source in your area. There will always be other forms of renewable power available. Port Elizabeth has a reputation of being windy. It’s called the Windy City for a reason! East London, Cape Town and many other towns and cities are also constantly blowing. The government should consider this form of renewable energy as a secondary option for the households of South Africa because it will provide a little support on all other forms of electricity and Eskom won’t have to take as much strain on trying to support the whole of South Africa.
Geothermal Energy is also a...
