The country of Italy has a developed democracy; the form of government used is the Republic. There are three branches of government, federal, national, and state. The three branches on the federal level are the executive branch, legislative branch, and judicial branch. The top branch is the executive branch. The executive branch consists of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Council of Ministers. The next branch of government is the legislative branch. The legislative branch consists of a bicameral Parliament that includes the Senate, and Chamber of Deputies. The final branch of the federal government is the judicial branch. The judicial branch consists of the 15 member Constitutional Court. The legal system is based on civil law with judicial review. (website CIA-The World Fact book) Their constitution was written on January 1, 1948. During World War II Italy went from a fascist dictatorship led by Mussolini in 1943, back to a monarchy in 1946, and became a Republic by a popular referendum on June 2, 1946. The departments under the president of the Council of Ministers are Regional Affairs, Equal Opportunity, Institutional Reform and Devolution, Public Function and Security, Parliamentary Relations, European Union Policy, Technology, Italians Abroad, and Government Program Implementation. The presidential election is held every seven years with an electoral college consisting of both houses of Parliament and 58 regional representatives casting votes. The prime minister is appointed by the president and confirmed by parliament. The Council of Ministers are nominated by the prime minister and approved by the president.
