Warfare has been fought since the beginning of man. So how has warfare changed over the thousands of years? How has man changed because of warfare? Man has been acquiring the knowledge of warfare by coming up with new gizmo and ideas in military tactics to alter the way warfare was fought. Although warfare is not elegant, it is a way of showing how mankind has developed in its creativity and ingenuity.
The oldest military tactic that was ever used was the infantry tactics. Before 1 BC, the key to victory in a battle was your infantry. Not necessarily how many, but how you use them in a way that is appropriate to achieve dominion in your conquest. But when your infantry was going up against a bastion, you would have to come up with different ideas to overcome the obstacle. This is called siege warfare One civilization came up with the way to be victorious when they were assaulting a bastion.
The Assyrians, we know them as terrorists. They were excellent military strategists especially when it came to siege warfare. They came up with the idea of siege ramps which allowed them to get over the barricade of a bastion. They also came up with the idea of a battering ram which allowed them to break in the front gate or knock down a barricade. With these at their disposal, the Assyrians were very successful especially during the assault of the city during 701 BC. But then came about the situation when you were out in the open field and you had to protect yourself, what then?
The hoplite phalanx, used by the Spartans when Sparta and Athens were fighting against each other this was a very effective way of using a few soldiers all put in columns protecting themselves from all sides. The hoplite phalanx was very effective for getting in, killing fast, and going home. To be honest I learned that most of the Spartans did not want to, fight for too long because they will miss the harvest. It is still being used today in the form of a tank.
The time of transition from BC to AD was a time of similar combat tactics. During the early years of AD not much was altered for military tactics and ideas. There were the Crusades going on during this time which made some armies grow in size to fight for their beliefs. They all used infantry tactics and cavalry, which were horseback riders. One notable group of people during this time was the Barbarians.
The Barbarians created horse born reserves that were placed at their garrisons. These are like our extra military vehicles that we may have in our country. These horses would be used for the cavalry riders at their garrisons. A garrison is an emergency batch of extra soldiers for the army in need. One key battle that took place during this time was the Battle of Tours.
The Battle of Tours was a battle that was led by Charles Martel. Charles Martel was the leader of the Christian army that halted the advance of the Spanish who were trying to bring Islam to Western Europe. Charles Martel was the one in charge of the...
