“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” (Woolf, 1989) Basically we are nothing without food. Food is a universal element which binds many people together. Many will argue that it is one of the most important things in the world simply because the right foods when eaten contain a plethora of nutrients which keeps us alive. There are so many diets in the world depending on the country or region. When food is native to an area, it is considered their regional diet. Despite, every country having its regional diet, there’s one that it believed to superior above all other diets. The Mediterranean diet has long been celebrated for its highly palatable nature and favourable impact on the prevention of chronic diseases, promotion of greater longevity and quality of life. (Brill, 2013) In fact, I won’t doubt this but there is two sides to every story right? This diet in all its high esteem has its cons been ignored and compared the diet of my region, the Central region of Ghana, my diet is superior because of its not only affordable and accessible it also is nutritious and delicious.
There isn’t one recognized definition for the Mediterranean diet because of the different eating habits of the more than 18 countries along the Mediterranean Sea. But according the Harvard Medical School Health Blog, the elements of a Mediterranean-type diet is to base every meal on fruits, vegetables, whole grains (whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa and bulgur), olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes (lentils, dried peas and beans), seeds, herbs and spices; eat fish at least twice a week, eat moderate portions of cheese and yogurt daily to weekly. eat moderate portions of poultry and eggs every two days or weekly eat red meat sparingly or limit to three-ounce portions and drink plenty of water each day, and drink wine in moderation—no more than one (5-ounce) glass a day for women, two glasses per day for men. (Godman, 2013).The Mediterranean diet which is praised for its sheer taste and nutritious benefits such as reducing the occurrence of heart diseases, diabetes. Even though this diet may portray many pros, there are also cons. The diet requires a lot of money, time and knowledge
