Gender discrimination can cover a wide variety of social prejudice. Throughout much of world history, even American history women have been treated as second class citizens. In the United States women have had to fight for rights such as the right to vote, or own land. These are just a few examples of the many injustices that women have had to face. Men have held the position of leadership, and power throughout history when it comes to almost everything. Men would even decide to whom a women would get married to among a whole host of other things. Gender Discrimination in the workplace is one of the more recent problems that United State citizens have had to face. Despite the input of laws such as the equal pay act of 1963 this still is a problem for many American women today. This is considered a problem because the growing presence of women in higher educational jobs. Women should be paid the same as men when working in the same field. Although many Americans believe this, in many work places this is not the case. Not only is this cause for a huge concern, women’s lower pay may mean that they have trouble taking care of not only themselves, but their families as well. There are a lot more single income houses in America today than in the past. Also many women have had to become the main source of income in a family because of economic problems. Women may be discouraged by the discrimination and pay gap making them less effective at their jobs. In this essay I plan to discuss gender discrimination in the work place, the gender pay gap, and the social stereotypes that cause these problems.
Gender discrimination can mean treating a person differently simply because of the sex based on social stereotypes or because they do not comply with traditional ideas of gender in the workforce. Generally speaking in almost all occupations in the United States, women lag behind when it comes to equal employment opportunities in the workforce. For example, according to a study conducted at San Fernando Valley State College when a person with a PhD applies for a job at an university, that person is much more likely to receive a higher level of appointment, get an offer of a leadership position, and be offered a full professorship if they are male then if they are female with the same qualifications. This is a problem because victims of gender discrimination can lose the motivation needed to perform their highest levels at work. These problems can lead to loss in productivity in that individual and cause other problems in the workplace. I think this is an important issue because 57% percent of the students attending college are women and they are becoming more qualified so it is important that they have the same equal opportunities as the opposite sex.
