Over one million Americans in the United States are living with or have been diagnosed with leukemia. That’s a big amount of people. I chose to do my research paper on leukemia because two years ago I lost my grandma to the cancer. I wanted to know more about the disease and what was happening to her. I researched the different types, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and what kind of research is being done to help cure leukemia. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells that start in the bone marrow. During leukemia the bone marrow starts to make a lot of abnormal white blood cells or “leukemia cells”.

Even though it cured her twenty years ago it ended up killing her later on. A person who has these risk factors will want to go to the doctors more often to make sure they aren’t experiencing symptoms.
There are many symptoms of leukemia. They can be little things like fever, night sweats, and headaches. There are also more identifying symptoms such as bruising or bleeding easily, bone or joint pain, feeling tired or weak, losing weight, and not feeling hungry. The most noticeable signs of leukemia is a swollen or painful belly from an enlarged spleen, swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, neck, or groin, and getting a lot of infections. If a person is experiencing any of these symptoms they should go to the doctors right away and get an exam. After a person is diagnosed with leukemia there are many ways to treat the cancer.
Treatment for leukemia comes in many ways. Some ways a doctor can determine what kind of treatment is the best for the patient is by the type of leukemia they have, their age, where the leukemia cells were found, what stage it’s in, and the general health of the patient. There are any different types of treatment including watchful waiting, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, biological therapy, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplant.
