In doing my Research Proposal, I will set guidelines to assist library patrons who do not have any computer experience to learn the basics of using the computer. Everyone should have some kind of technical training because the world is steadily evolving in technology. Special needs people can also benefit from this training. Teachers who do not have the proper training for special needs students will learn how to assist those students.
Statement of the Problem
One of the problems that many library staff face is patrons enthusiastically visit the library, but they do not know how to use a computer. A lot open job positions require employees to have e-mail accounts in order to apply; however, the reason they do not have an e-mail account is because patrons lack computer knowledge. The library is not what it used to be. The library supplies books, children’s programs, public access computers, wireless internet, downloadable e-Books, auto books, magazines as well as offer e-Books that can patrons to check the out at one time. The library houses encyclopedias and other reference works offsite; offers meeting rooms for the general public; provides access to search the Heritage Quest genealogy database; displays various types of artwork; provides individuals to assist homework; and even has its own website and mobile application. Some library offer patrons one-hour computer classes.
It is important for future librarians to study this topic because of the forever evolving technology. In this technological society of today, everyone should have some kind of knowledge of using any type computer device. The library will be there for individuals who need assistance with writing checks, computer training, resume writing, or just one on one help. It would be helpful if retired individuals who have experience in the aforementioned topics assist in the library a few hours per week. The library needs all types of volunteers to help with training.
Learning to become computer literate is an issue and will continue to become a problem in today’s rapidly changing technical world. Every needs to know how to check e-mail or have some kind of knowledge on how to use a computer. Creating a resume for a job is a major problem of a lot of individuals who do not have software training. When I interviewed the librarian for the Essex County Public Library, this was one of the major issues they frequently encountered. Some of their patrons who visited the library could not read or write, but the library staff assisted them. Many people who came to the library needed to setup e-mail accounts for their job; it was a requirement.
When applying my practice, I would setup a guide with links that include a 10-step process to help students write a research paper. The first step is having the layout for students to understand the importance of conducting research prior to writing the paper. Students would be able to access information...
