Research Task Group R16 Sydney University Essay

1144 words - 5 pages

Research is the vital step within the writing process since doing research could help writers to open the story line and increase the stock of knowledge (Alten n.d.). Lack of research may cause many writing obstacles including lack of materials and the inadequacy of evidences. This study is designed to indicate how research is incorporated into the process of writing. For this task, I extracted one paragraph from one of the sources that I have used to draw my sentences to examine the way the source incorporate research.

A US warship has sailed close to an artificial island created by China in the South China Sea as part of a “freedom of navigation” operation. China’s foreign ministry said: “The US destroyer’s actions have violated Chinese and international laws, as well as severely harmed China’s sovereignty and security. China is very displeased with this and will bring up the issue with the US side.” “We told them we are a US [ship] conducting routine operations in international waters, ” the American official said. However, China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, despite partial counter-claims from Taiwan and several south-east Asian nations including the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam. Furthermore, Beijing says its right to the area goes back centuries to when the Paracel and Spratly island chains were regarded as integral parts of the Chinese nation, and in 1947 it issued a map detailing its claims. It showed the two island groups falling entirely within its territory. Those claims are mirrored by Taiwan. Beijing says it is entitled to “limited defensive facilities” on its territory, and dismissed reports about the missile placement as media hype. China says much of the infrastructure it is building is purely civilian in nature and will benefit other countries. China landed fully armed jet fighters on an expanded airstrip on Woody Island in November, and reinforced hangars have been completed, regional diplomats have told Reuters (The Guardian 2017).
The main idea of paragraph 1 is China want to make it clear that the sail of US warship to South China Sea is the behavior that violate Chinese territory and security, even though the US explained that their warship is sailing within 12 nautical miles limit, which should be the International territory. Because China state that the South China Sea is not only a geopolitical issue but also a problem left over by the history as China have claimed almost the whole South China Sea in 1947. From China’s position, I simply choose the sentence ‘China is very displeased with this and will bring up the issue with the US side’ as it is assumed that China will properly not admit the 12 nautical miles limit within the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention of the Laws of the Sea) given that there was no UNCLOS when China claimed the South China Sea in 1947. Therefore, starting with pathos could give the audiences intuitive appreciation. This is why I choose this...
