Review Of Empirical Studies: The Usage Of Games In Foreign Language Acquisition

This paper reviews literature on serious games in the Foreign Language (FL) acquisition with the respect to grammar skills enhancement and attitudes towards grammar. The search identified a significant body of studies that tended to focus on the implementation of serious games in FL vocabulary and listening skills development, and both teachers and international students’ perceptions on grammar. However, there has been comparatively little exploration of serious games impact on FL learners’ grammar achievements and attitudinal change towards grammar. They replicated the Loewen et al.’s (2009) study in Yeditepe University, Turkey and explored 26 participants studying English as a second language. The similar results were obtained: (1) a half of the respondents claimed that grammar was boring but essential aspect in learning a foreign language, and (2) more real-life oriented tasks should be used by the teachers. Limitations Supporting the findings of Loewen et al. (2009) and Incecay and Dollar (2011), Weger’s (2013) study revealed disagreement between learners’ interest in explicit grammar exercises and low popularity rank of these assignments compared to other classroom activities. International students enrolled in the lower-level ESL courses demonstrated “higher preferences for daily attention to explicit grammar instruction” than the upper-level (Weger, 2013, p. ). Other possible explanations for this controversial attitude are students’ prior learning experiences and teaching practices. The previous findings disclosed that non-native speaker educators preferred traditional approach to teaching a foreign language with the emphasis on grammar patterns exercises.
