Linda Hutcheon argues that adaptations are often considered as second-line art forms, since they are always originated from other pieces of arts, hence critics and reviewers usually compare these works with the original ones. When people talk about adaptations, most of the time they think about literary texts like a novel or short story being remade as a big screen movie, or a television show and opinions are usually that these remade stories are less in value, then the original ones, although there are other forms of art, like ballet, or opera which are less attacked by public opinion. This might be because, people tend to think about texts like novels and such superior to any other art form because of it is among the first ones of their kind, and it lets the reader to use their imagination and create a world of their own, while movies take this experience away from the viewer. First, adaptation as a product can be interpreted as transposition, as in genre (poem to movie) or in perspective, or by shifting from a real story to a fiction. Second, as a process of recreating the original’s message to the audience which needs creativity, then reinterpreting the main idea. Third, as a “process of reception”, so that the viewer (or reader) can be attached to the original while watching (or reading/playing) the adaptation – this can form a kind of attachment where the receiver can feel that he/she knows more, than he/she is being told. So it is clear, that adaptation as such can be interpreted as a product and a process also. Adaptations fulfill our need for repetition as much like our need for change. Adaptation as a product can be defined as a kind of translation, since translations are always a kind of transaction of texts and languages. This is true for adaptations as well; they are also transactions, or recoding into different media (e.g words to images or even music). If we look at adaptations as a creative process, we might think adaptation can be regarded as taking an already existing story and filter, expand or shorten it, depending on what we want to show by that story. The art and creativity lies where the adaptor takes a story, and reinterprets it as a new one.
If we want to study adaptations as a process, we might consider the modes of engagement, or platforms. Telling mode (such as novels), showing mode (film) are passive, while interactive mode (videogames) invites us to be actually part of the story, still all three modes are immerse. Telling mode lets us to free our imagination, controlled by specific words that empower our fantasy. Showing mode instead takes us to a journey that relies on our primary perceptions such as vision and hearing. Interactivity on the other hand, is a new form of media. It is similar to showing mode, only here we are not only percept the surrounding world, but we are a part of it, we can act in it as our will wishes to. These modes can be connected to each other as well, taking adaptation as process to a new level, where genre and mode specific definitions are not so clear any more. Time and space are much more important, since these factors can alter the way a story is interpreted.
