The commentary by Arundatta specifically refers to the use of ‘tiktaksheera basti’ (basti medication prepared by using ksheerapaka formulation of drugs of tikta rasa attribute) in the treatment of ailments of ‘asthivaha srotasa’ (~channel of the asthi dhaatu). Owing to the similarity in the fundamental ‘mahabhautic’ constitutions of the tikta rasa and the asthi dhaatu (both expressed with the predominance of vaayu and aakaash mahabhuta), and the fact that the attribute of the tikta rasa, which aggravates the vaata dosha is inherently detrimental to the healing of asthi dhaatu anomalies, the treatment of asthi anomalies with the use of tikta dravya, may appear contradictory. However, it is very well experienced that the use of milk as a medium to dispense this tikta dravya, helps to promote the healing of asthi dhaatu. This effect that is gained with the help of amalgamation of properties of milk and the tikta dravya is a balance between the attributes like snigdhatva (oleaginous attribute), shoshanatva (dehydrating attribute) and kharatva (roughness), which are all essential for this type of healing.
