Rhetorical Analysis Of New Thing Presentation

My new thing was a video game that would simulate life in Lagos, Nigeria. When I came up with the idea, I wanted to create something that would be educational and fun. I choose a video game, as I knew that it would appeal to other teenagers and I had seen other video games that were used for educational purposes. When it came time to give my presentation, I used my own research and visual aids to convince the audience of my peers to invest in my new thing.

I started with a PowerPoint presentation to first talk about the basic idea behind my product. I caught the attention of my audience by alluding educational video games many students previously played as children, such as Clue Finders ...view middle of the document...

I wanted for my audience to realize that by making that the setting of the game, children would learn about the problems that Lagos is facing. Since I could only choose a small amount of statistics to present without boring the audience, I chose ones that would stick with them, such as the mortality rates and poverty problems. The statistics also showed my audience that I had come prepared and that I had spent time researching my topic, allowing them to place more confidence in me as a presenter and a creator. I furthered this effect by including very little hard data on my slides, so that my audience could see I was not just reading off the screen, but had previously memorized the data.

After explaining why I had chosen the medium and setting I had, I went to explain what the game would consist of and what its purpose was. I started with explaining how I would make the game. I used logos and ethos to appeal to my audience, saying that the game would be simple enough to be made by the programming club at our school, which I am an officer of. By presenting myself as an authority on the topic of creating this type of game, my audience was able to see that I was promising a product that could be completed, not just an idea. It would also be logical for the game to be developed at the same school that the investors attended, so that they could check the progress of the game and see what their money was going towards. I went on to show the class how the game would work, giving them a general outline. By showing them the strategy of the game and the tools it would use to teach children about Lagos, I appealed to their logic. I was able to explain how different parts of the game, such as the schools or the income, would help children realize the difficulty of moving between socioeconomic classes in Nigeria. I tried to show that a game based on real life would be most suitable for teaching about life in Lagos.
