1. Gender roles are still relatively the same in the minds of men and women from that of 50 years ago. Despite that statement, studies and statistics show a dramatic shift in the American family nucleus. Man and women’s core roles and responsibilities would hardly be recognizable to a couple living in the 1950’s. Below is an account of the changes both men and women have encountered when defining their roles based on sex in America. Additionally, how American responsibility moved out of the norm based on these gender role reversals. To exam the status of men and women in the United States, their varying (and shifting) roles must first be looked at a little closer.
2. In the last 50 years, traditional roles between men and women have significantly changed. A turn in feminist thought and attitude toward their outlook on life has shifted original ideals in a whole new direction. Women now put tremendous value in being a workplace professional as well as the matriarch within the home. Supporting this trend is a 2009 study completed by the U.S Bureau of Labor. “In 2009, 59 percent of working-age women in the United States were in the labor force. This percentage has increased from 43 percent four decades ago1.” In turn, man’s roles in American society have been altered dramatically based on the female vision. It is now acceptable, even encouraged to swap the title of breadwinner for the designation of stay at home dad. This changing of the tide in terms of roles within America has also altered how ladies and gentlemen divvy up the responsibilities in America.
