Running A Successful Business Takes More Than Just Good Luck

676 words - 3 pages

Success means the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. There are several ingredients that lead to success; one of them is luck. Luck is defined as an unknown or unpredictable phenomenon that contributes to a favorable outcome. Many important discoveries have been made by accident, and many inventions that brought significant breakthroughs have been created while people were actually trying to invent a different device. Running a business sometimes also needs good luck. For instance, some business investors earn a huge amount of money only by occasionally purchasing a good stock. However, to build a successful business takes more than just good luck; people still need to have perseverance, to accept help and advice, and to build employees' self-esteem.First of all, the most valuable characteristic is perseverance to succeed in one's business. Perseverance is the quality of being determined to do or achieve something; also it is continuing or repeating behavior. A persistent person is usually a hard worker, and hard work is one of the important elements that contribute to success in a business. According to the article "The Company Man," Ellen Goodman says, "he worked six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night" (439). Those hours shows that Phil is diligent and dedicated to his work. Furthermore, people who have perseverance do not give up after a failure. If people give up too easily, they will rarely achieve anything. It is usual to fail in the first attempt at something new, so people should not feel discouraged and should try again. For example, in the article "Millionaire Questionnaire", Robert Mills and his son sold only two pumps by spending nine months in 1989 making 1000 sales calls; however, they sold 15 pumps in the tenth month. Today, they own Kudu Industries Inc which employs 100 and has annual sales of $35 million (McQueen 417). In short, developing perseverance can help people to succeed in their business. Not only do people need perseverance, they also should accept help and advice from others when they...
