Religion is a community of people that share a symbolic world. Much of what is practiced is really only understood by those within the community itself. Members of the community are insiders in the sense and many religions are no exception to this practice. Different religions are filled with language, tradition, ritual, symbolism and beliefs that others may find confusing and may not understand. In Christianity, one particular area that can confuse outsiders is their teachings and belief in angels. Saint Michael the Archangel plays a very significant role in Christian tradition and their religious belief and practice. Michael, who was ranked as the Prince of all the Angels. Some Christian traditions also hold that angels play a variety of specific roles in the lives of believers. Christian religion teaches that each individual person is entrusted to the care of an angel and each Christian may be assigned a guardian angel at their baptism (Cook, et al. 2005). It is their guardian angel who protects them and keeps them from the grasps of evil demons. It was the Archangels who were entrusted with the tasks of guarding all nations (Saunders).
Christian traditions hold that angels are organized into a Celestial Hierarchy. There are three major Hierarchies and they are subdivided into orders or nine choirs of angels. The traditional order is as follows: There are the angels of pure contemplation which govern all creation. In this group there are the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones. The second group is the angels of the cosmos that govern all the Cosmos. In this group you have the Dominions, Powers and Virtues. The final group are the angels of the world who are said to govern the entire world. In the group you have the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. The Cherubim and Seraphim are the closest to God, and the Angels and Archangels are most related to being involved in human affairs (Cook et al. 2005).
The Archangel Michael is one of only three of God's angels that are named directly named in the Bible. The other two were Gabriel, who was God's special messenger, and Lucifer, the original name of Satan or The Devil. Archangels are important ranking of angels. These angels, especially St. Michael, were held in the highest esteem, and were said to be God’s ministers. Christians closely associated these angels with Christ himself (Saunders). Angels in Christian belief are spiritual beings who serve God. The name, St. Michael, means one who is like God, and he is best known to be the Archangel who led the army of angels who cast Satan and the rebellious angels into hell. It is believed that at the end of time, on judgement day, he will wield the sword of justice to separate the righteous from the evil, and present Gods followers to him (Saunders).
There is many scripture that describes Saint Michael the Archangels role in Church history along with the traditions held in his name. Saint Michael is one of the oldest devotions of the Church and his roles date back before the Incarnation. He is the Archangel who defended and assisted God's people on earth. It was St. Michael who led God's army against Lucifer and the other rebellious fallen angels and he holds the highest rank among the Angels. Michael is known as a champion and protector of the Jewish people during the time of the Apostles. He is described as the Guardian Angel of the Catholic Church, helper in battle, and defender of souls. Michael is an advocate of the dying, consoler of the souls in purgatory.
