How far is too far?
In a corrupt world where no one knows what the past was like, what is the right form of government? In the book 1984 by George Orwell, the government revolves around the people. The country of Oceania has known nothing but war, as far as the citizens can remember. The main character Winston, works for the government in a building called the Ministry of Truth. The government has telescreens set up everywhere, and is able to watch every move and has police that can process every thought. Winston wants to remember a time before Big Brother, if there ever was one, and rebel. Although there is controversy over whether the government is involved too much in the life of citizens, there is also aspects of where the technolology and keeping tabs on citizens have made a positive impact.
Even in a corrupt government there is still hope in living how each individual wants to live. Orwell speaks about a life of war, where Oceania has seen nothing but it, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength”(). The repititioin and contradiction of this quote throughout the book puts huge emphasis on it. War is peace- war is definetly not peace, or is it? The Party is able to maintain the peace because of the war, if everyone is fighting against the same thing then everyone has something in common and no one will have a reason to leave. Freedom is slavery- is he who is free actually free? In the Party there is no freedom. Everone is a slave in their community, and enslaved in their life no matter if they are free or not. Ignorance is strength- the less knoweledge the people know, the more power the government has. The government takes away everything "Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or...
