The legality of gay marriage is a hot topic for many reasons. Traditionally marriage has been known as a legal bond between a man and a woman. Times have changed since those days. More and more people are coming out of the closet everyday. There are more gay people today than there ever have been and that number is only increasing. Marriage is a way for two people to show their commitment towards each other, so it should not matter what their gender or sexual orientation is.
Marriage is just one way for two people to show their love for another. Whether it is two men, two women, or a man and a woman, love is love. People against gay marriage do not have the right to deny people of showing their love for one another. Everyone deserves the same rights as Americans and also just as people. The United States of America promotes freedom, liberty, and justice for all people. Same-sex couples are many times not included when it comes to marriage rights.
Denying people to get married is a form of discrimination. People are being treated differently because of their sexual orientation and it is morally wrong. Gay marriage has no effect on heterosexuals. So why are so many heterosexuals against it? The arguments against gay marriage are unreasonable. Some believe that being gay is unnatural or influences children to be gay. Studies show that there is no difference between children raised by same sex or straight couples.
The Defence of Marriage Act of 1996 forbids federal governments from recognizing same-sex marriage which means only state governments can decide if they want to legalize or not legalize gay marriages in that state. There are many benefits that straight married couples receive that gay married couples do not receive. The federal government denies gay married couples taxation and social security benefits that straight married couples receive. States that have legalized same-sex marriage allow all of the benefits to gay married couples as they do straight married couples. Therefore, states that have not legalized same-sex marriages do not recognize couples as married couples in that state. Only 14 states in The United States legally allow same-sex marriage, 35 states ban same-sex marriage, and 1 state does not ban or legalize same-sex marriage.
Same-sex marriage is a form of inequality. In an interview with Brandon Voss, George Clooney said "Well before Prop. 8, I've made the point that every time we’ve stood against equality, we’ve been on the wrong side of history. It’s the same kind of argument they made when they didn’t want blacks to serve in the military, or when they didn’t want blacks to marry whites. One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black. People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side." Gay couples that have tried to get married have been treated wrong for decades. Gays have been...
